Investing isn't a one-size-fits-all proposition; the core principle of investment portfolio construction lies in aligning your financial choices with your unique objectives and time horizon. For example, if you're investing for retirement and have several decades to go, you'd generally prioritize long-term growth.

However, if your investment goals are more immediate – say, you're saving for a home down payment within the next few years – the investment landscape shifts. In this scenario, the focus typically moves from capital growth to capital preservation and income generation.

Here are five of the best types of short-term investments for generating income, according to experts:

1. Treasury bills, or T-bills, are short-term debt securities issued by the U.S. government. When investors purchase a T-bill, they're effectively lending money to the government. In return, the government agrees to pay back the full face value of the bill upon its maturity.

2. "Certificates of deposit, or CDs, are time deposits offered by banks with a fixed term, typically ranging from a few months to several years," says Taylor Kovar, CEO and founder at Kovar Wealth Management. "They provide a guaranteed interest rate, making them a safe and predictable investment."

Markets ended down on Tuesday, as investors looked ahead to today's Federal Reserve decision on interest rates. The market overwhelmingly expects the Fed to hold interest rates at current levels after recent sticky inflation readings.

Walt Disney Co. (DIS) shares fell 3.6% after the company announced plans to spend $60 billion on theme-park expansions, cruises and similar in-person experiences over the next decade. The business segment is responsible for the majority of Disney's profits.

The large-cap S&P 500 closed down 0.22%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 0.23% and the blue-chip Dow fell by 0.31% on the day.

CART's tidy markup. Shares of delivery company Maplebear Inc. (CART), which does business as Instacart, started trading on the Nasdaq at $42 on Tuesday after being priced at $30 per share on Monday for a fully diluted valuation of $10.2 billion. The stock fell back to earth somewhat but still landed up 12.3% over Monday's price.

While investors gave the stock a more sober look after the company reached a private market valuation of $39 billion in 2021, the offering has helped breathe some life into what has otherwise been a slow year for initial public offerings. As the first venture-backed IPO since December 2021, many in the venture capital and startup worlds are watching Instacart's public debut closely to gauge investor appetite.
